All Saints Day

For the majority of Europeans, the Christian tradition of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day symbolises the day we reminisce on the saints and the people who have died over time.

In Belgium, custom calls for that we place flowers on the graves of persons we sincerely care for.

But where did this tradition stem from?

The Christian tradition

The Christian tradition of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day has been introduced by Paus Bonifatius IV in 609 to remember the Saints and the people who we lost. It has replaced the old Celtic tradition of Samhain, a harvest fest that marked the end of summer and beginning of winter.

It’s also closely linked to the origins of Halloween. The Celts believed that the ‘door’ to the underworld was somewhat opened at Samhain, and the line between our and the spirits’ world blurred. This made it possible for souls of the deceased as well as other creatures, like fairies and demons, to return to the “living” realm. To defend themselves from the spirit’s influence, people wore disguises and masks, pretending to be supernatural. They believed that this would protect them from these evil influences.

What is the true value of this tradition?

Regardless of its origin, the true Christian tradition is truly important for everyone since it encourages us to reflect on those who we’ve lost throughout the years. Observe and contemplate on the values that they have brought into our life.

I would like to encourage everyone to think about the pleasant and positive moments you’ve shared with them. To be grateful for the value they have contributed to your life, even if some events might have been challenging. Realise that, to some extent, they have contributed to who you become today.

What does it mean to me?

All Saints Day

This photograph has captured my attitude towards the fond memories of the meaningful people in my life.

Art Vivendi literally means the Art to Live. Death, how painful the grief might be, in the end, a part of the circle of life. One needs to endure the pain of loss in order to truly understand what it means to live.

In all honesty, I hope that this day is as positive for you as it feels for me.
